Sites to See: The Door to Hell!
The Darvaza gas crater in Turkmenistan is one of many wonders along the route for the Mongol Rally. This natural gas field collapsed into an underground cavern and in 1971, geologists ignited it to prevent the spread of methane gas. It's been burning continuously ever since which has aptly earned it the nickname, "Door to Hell" or ''Gates of Hell".
