Sites to See: Ani - The Ghost Town of 1001 Churches

Always looking for interesting things to see along the route, this week's focus is on the ghost town of Ani, known as "the city of a thousand and one churches." Situated on the eastern border of Turkey, it was founded more than 1,600 years ago where it grew to become a walled city of more than 100,000 residents by the 11th century. In the centuries that followed, Ani was conquered hundreds of times eventually falling into a period of steep decline before being completely abandoned by the 1700s. Since then, it has been rediscovered only to be looted and vandalised before becoming the ghost town that it is today - a shell of the once-great metropolis. ============================== Follow the action at: https://mongolrally2018.wixsite.com/home The Mongol Rally is a charity event, rallying to make the world better.
